| United Illuminating (UI)
2007 Financial Enterprise
Challenge
United Illuminating is an IOU that distributes electricity to 325,000
electric customers in New Haven, Connecticut. Currently UI maintains
and uses parts of three ERP solutions and a custom developed budgeting
system and other financial solutions to accommodate its financial
needs
The current budgeting system does not provide adequate business
functionality and there is a lack of automated interfaces between
the systems for preferred financial and business performance reporting
purposes.
Solution
TMG was hired to evaluate their current Financial Applications and
make recommendations for enhancing and or replacing its current
solutions.
Result
TMG has completed its initial process review and is currently developing
business and application requirements to accommodate these needs.
Final recommendations will be made as to a total business and financial
implementation solution.
2006 OMS Challenge
In 2005 United Illuminating undertook a full function OMS system
implementation with a third-party system integrator.
The OMS system has multiple interfaces to other United Illuminating
business systems including CIS, GIS, AMR, and SCADA.
Solution
TMG was hired to manage the implementation effort effectively and
make certain all parties (client, vendor, system integrator) fulfill
their respective responsibilities toward a successful implementation.
Responsibilities included all project planning, scheduling and
budgeting, status and executive reporting, scope management, client,
vendor and third party integrator management and liaison, resource
management, change request coordination, risk management, and issue
coordination and resolution.
Result
The Outage Management System was successfully implemented in September
2007, on time and within budget. Post-implementation clean-up activities
and completion of all interfaces was finalized in mid-December 2007.
2001 Challenge
UIL had implemented a mainframe based CIS solution in 1993. Unfortunately,
the utility implemented a system with a 1960’s architecture
and design. Faced with a competitive marketplace and support for
numerous regulated and non-regulated subsidiaries, UIL commissioned
the development of a business plan.
Solution
TMG was engaged to provide an expert opinion on the findings of
the business plan and to prepare a separate report to be presented
directly to UIL executives. TMG provided information regarding industry
activity, market solutions, installation costs and timeframes, customer
application architectures, customer profiles, and lessons learned.
This information was orally presented to executives. A formal report
was produced that validated the business plan with exception, and
recommended replacement of the legacy CIS with an adjusted budget
amount and approach.
Result
TMG assisted with the evaluation and selection process, and SAP
CCS solution was chosen. TMG provided installation oversight and
quality assurance services during the 20-month installation.
