Newport News
Challenge
Newport News wanted to replace 20-year-old legacy mainframe-based
applications. Its existing suite included 4 mainframe and 58 other
application systems (LAN and packages). The mainframe systems were
using the COBOL XE utility and had not been enhanced since prior
to Y2K.
Solution
TMG was engaged to create a business case. TMG conducted an industry
perspective, gathered business, technical, and system information
through interviews, surveys and walkthroughs. TMG also conducted
executive and senior manager vision and strategy workshops, introduced
alternatives in a working session and conducted an extensive workshop
to review and modify the TMG templates to reflect Newport News’
specific requirements. Five alternatives were identified, evaluated
and results presented to the Newport News leadership team.
Result
TMG evaluated their numerous systems and organized them into 4 groups:
replace immediately, upgrade/replace soon, replace long term, and
enhance now through better support. CIS and Work Management were
deemed to be replaced immediately. TMG developed a design blueprint,
developed and issued an RFP in June of 2004.
